Aggravated DUI
If you have received felony charges for a DUI offense, this is called “aggravated” DUI. Aggravated DUIs carry stiffer penalties than non-felony DUIs. As such, you will not be able to reduce your community service hours or mandatory jail time. In the state of Illinois, aggravated DUIs carry standard punishments consisting of:
- Imprisonment for 10 days
- 480 hours of community service
If you were operating a school bus with children on board at the time you were charged with DUI, driving without liability insurance, or driving without a driver’s license, you could be punished with:
- 1 to 3 years of imprisonment
- Up to $25,000 in fines
If you are facing felony charges for a DUI offense, you may have to deal with a number of other inconvenient consequences. Your driving record will be blemished and you may have to miss work to deal with legal issues. The courts could also confiscate your car, make you file an SR-22 form, or make you purchase the more expensive, “high-risk” car insurance for a period of 3 years. Also, you may have to install a breath alcohol ignition interlock device (BAIID) in your car.
