A 54 year-old volunteer bookkeeper has admitted to stealing about $45,000 from a suburban Chicago church congregation. He pleaded guilty to theft charges earlier this week.
The man says he used most of the money to pay for medical bills. He was charged last year when church officials noticed a significant amount of money was going to an unknown bank account. The bookkeeper had been putting the money in a business bank account and then writing checks to himself.
He is believed to have taken the money from Messiah Lutheran Church over a two-year period from 2008 to 2010.
