Graduate student Yongfei Ci was arraigned on September 30 after being arrested for the alleged murder of his ex-girlfriend, Mengchen Huang.
Ms. Huang was reported murdered on September 27 by a female friend who was present in Huang’s Champaign-Urbana apartment where the attack took place. Police were able to track Ci’s cellphone and arrest him at a nearby hotel, where he submitted without a fight.
It may take up to a year for his trial to begin, according to a report released on October 3. He will face a preliminary hearing on October 22.
The investigation is ongoing.
